I use symmetry often in my work, especially in some of the CD covers that I do. I have often found that you can get some very interesting patters and shapes with the effect. This is sometimes referred to as mirroring. A mere duplication, flipped horizontally and blended in. When I create the initial artwork, I leave a little overlap intentionally. Once duplicated and mirrored, I softly remove the overlap so no seem is present....
Working on many multiple layers, and using the various blending modes, allows for visual effects that can look quite realistic. The light blending modes will let an artist add to and create fire and smoke. Distorting and layering these more gives control of the elements too...
