One Hit Wonder...

We have all heard of them, the One Hit Wonders that are known throughout the music industry. With all the many contributing factors that goes into finding and nurturing new talent, it is not a surprise that some would flame out after one big hit. Its like playing the numbers, a certain percentage will not back up a phenomenal song. There are some who want to that on purpose.
In 1984 Apple computer needed a new and creative way to launch there new product.... the Macintosh. This wasn't any old product either, it was truly a revolution in technology, science, and the Arts. Apple hired Ridley Scott to put it together, and they planned to advertise it only once.
The SuperBowl was much younger then too, although the going rate for 1:00 minute spot was approaching seven figure range. It was an all or nothing approach that was unprecedented in the media world. Everyone else plays the ads until you are sick of them, but Apple said, "No, we will just do it once."
The commercial itself was the talk of the day, the following Monday. It is truly a cinematic jewel in every way, and you never got to see it again. Apple of course had other supporting advertising in place, but the Flagship spot was limited to just one play.
That instance alone changed television advertising as we know it, and began the annual tradition of super premiere ads for the game. Just take look at the enormous amount of pride that Steve Jobs exhibits in this video, the launching of his new baby.... Macintosh...

Kristen Duran | Christmas Peeve...

Those are some really wonderful photos of Peeve, one of my friends' kitty. The photographer is Kristen Duran, and she has been working on her photography for many years. One thing I have always enjoyed about Kristen's work is her composition. She has an incredible eye for setting up a beautiful photo.

One thing in particular that I liked so much on that second shot is the way the curve of the rattan goes from corner to corner of the frame. That is a very effective way to balance your shot and also to lead your viewer's eye through the image. The bold colors of the feathers are also a great feature of the photograph. They contrast so well against the background and subject.

The tones in blue eyes are so complimentary to the subject's eyes. Peeve had the most incredible blue eyes, and carrying that tone through the image allows for it to have a very unique look to it. Kristen practices alot and Peeve was always one of her favorite subjects. Kind of like hose blue-toned photographic prints of the past. The following image finds Peeve flipping through a magazine. Peeve was quite the fashionable kitty and was often found flipping through the style magazines for more ideas...

Kristen had asked for a little help on the background for that image. A few people did some edits, and I also did one...

You can click Kristen Duran's original, peeve reading to see the edits of the others too. I added a deck and some palm trees, so he looked like h wa in Aruba or something. Kristen has some great photos of Aruba as well as many other new subjects she has been working on. This coming year we will be adding more featured photographers in the blogs, and e will be sure to feature Kristen again with some of her portrait work. She has some really awesome work.

Imagine... 30 years later

I made that CD cover years ago in commemoration of the 22th Anniversary of his death. It is always so sad when we loose a person that is trying so hard to do some good in the world.

John and Yoko were achieving such great strides in making more folks aware of the wonderful things they had planned. I watched a great documentary the other night on PBS's American Masters series....

To All of Our Veterans, Thank You!

It is with such Thanks and Gratitude that I look forward to each Veteran's Day. I feel we owe so much to the men and women that work so hard, in places all over the world, to protect our freedoms, and families. We hold those things so dear, and we should never let a day go by without remembering the people that help keep us safe. Our Veterans devote so much of their time, and do it for help as the motivator. They provide a such service to our country, with the most valuable reward being that of hoping they helped some other people too, wherever they may be.

For what those soldiers must endure at the worst of times, we have them to thank for the life styles we are able to lead. We truly have the ability to do whatever we set our minds to. That is a value which is attractive to many people. It is a conceivable dream that can be achieved with applying hard work. Our soldiers never complain about hard work, they almost seem to thrive on it.

the Butterfly & Pueblo...

Every year the National Sandsculpting Festival and Competition is held at Revere Beach, which is just north of Boston. The artists that create these magnicent sculptures are also the ones who do some the ice pieces for First Night in Boston. They begin a few days before the show starts and to see them evolve from a block form is really amazing. The details and varying textures that they create are breathtaking. Many of the pieces are quite large and are completed all the around the sculpture.
We will be doing much more with these throughout the year. There are many links through out all of the sand castle pieces to find more. You can editi any of the ones from the CastleSun2 collection......

These are some pre-made selection masks...

I made my selection with the Pen Tool, but you could use the Selection Mask above instead. I recreated the gradation for the sky and added some contrast to the sculpture. The I relit the isolated subject on a seperate layer....

I applied the layer with the lighting effects as hard light with some opacity adjustment as you can see in the screen cap above. You can click any of those images and it will take you to the photo at flickr where you will find information specific to that editing.

Here are some additional clock images. See how the circle becomes a shorter ellipse as the perspective changes? An ellipse always relates to a circle, and in perspective that is how you show a difference in agle of your vantage point. As your position changes, the ellipse does too.

Absolut Fun…

One of the most parodied advertising campaigns is the Absolut Vodka long standing play on words. It was actually the thought of Geoff Hayes of TBWA advertising agency, and it came to him while he was taking a shower one morning in 1981. The initial ad for the campaign was Absolut Perfection, with the company's name used in place of the proper spelling. They still run today and are usually of a typical style of product photography.
It's all about the bottle and incorporating it in different situations that help emphasize the particular headline that the ad will carry. They are beautifully lit, with the bottle having nice highlights to show its distinctive form. In my parody below I used some transparency of the bottle to add depth to the image. It makes your eye believe the bottle is in front of the logo, because you visually see the logo through the bottle. Mine was all assembled in pieces and not shot at one time. Oh, and it was done the night the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. Here is how I put it together...

I started with a shot of the bottle, and used the Pen Tool to select…

I typically use Illustrator for most of my creative work involving type. So, I brought in the photo and started matching the type. Illustrator allows you to create paths from the type as well, so I have one copy as type, and the other as paths. Once the type is pathed you can not edit it with the text tool. That is why there are two versions of the text. I always do that in case there is a chage..The headline, which usually appears towards the bottom, is Futura Extra-Bold Condensed, with a tight tracking....
I used two seperate script typefaces for the bottle too. Binkham Script for "World Series" type that was replicating the Country of Sweden from the bottle...
...and Edwardian Script for the longer text of the bottle. When the bottle is shot straight on, there is little or no distortion in the type as it wraps around the bottle. Sometimes just condensing the type on the outside portions helps for realism. The type can be done in Photoshop too...

I brought the type into Photoshop on seperate layers, and airbrushed the bottle to eliminate the type that was there. I created the Red Sox logo a few years before in Illustrator for another project I was working on then. So, I brought that into Photoshop as wel....

Having the bottle on top and adjusted opacity allows for the logo to show through like glass. Two layers of the neck portion will make that appear thicker because pf the opacity difference. I can easily change the type colors and such too. Use command+click on a layer to select the imagery on that layer....
I made the gradation in photoshop as well. Finding the center line by pulling out a guideline...it nudges a touch when you pass center, and will stick there. I also brought a guide down from the top ruler. I knew I only wanted the top portion to have the gradation, so that is what I selected. I used a white to black Radial gradation and went from the center point of the guides to a little outside the trim...

The Players are isolated, and only a portion of Garciapara (you have to have been around the Sox in 2004). I placed the bottle purposely between two players where they were split apart so the edge came done further. I replaced the word Imported with Impressive as well...matching the font which makes it look more like the original bottle.

Billboard Design: Part 1...

We will soon be doing a tutorial on billboard design which will feature work in Photoshop as well as bit in Illustrator. You will be okay if all you have is Photoshop though or any editing program that allows for some customization of the characters, such as kerning. One thing I like to do when I get a new project is study it a little and learn what it is all about. Here are some visual examples of some I have done over the years (can you Guess my favorite?)

That last image is sort of started by adding in the logo. The Image is at a decent aspect ratio to begin with. That is always something to be certain of with billboards, as the come in many different shapes and sizes. But, for what we want, that will work fine and there will be more on the aspect ratio stuff in the tutorial later on. Here is another example of an image in decent aspect ratio...and the final edit it was cropped from...

Remember too, that billboards and posters come in different shapes, which are their aspect ratios...

And you can refer back to Lesson 1 for the basics in layering...

Using Composite work will truly allow for so much more opportunity in your editing. Once you get some of the basics down, try working more with complex work. Be certain to leave your files in layered format as a .psd file, and this will allow you to do more with the files. Blending is great fun, and can be used in so many different visual effects. Many of the examples in this blog have a a variety of blending options done to them.
Once you get further along with your editing of the imagery, you will want to start thinking about the text. Your style of typography will also set a mood and feeling, so choose your type carefully. Some of these may help you with that.....

Angels on the Moon & Thunderbirds too...

I used the Pen Tool to define the edge. This makes for a very precise line. You can use the Polygonal Lasso Tool, but these are F-16s and they are more rounded than the F-18s from the Blue Angel 7 work. You can see that I started at the fin in front of the cockpit and worked my way around the nose, including the altimeter that sticks out. Coming across the belly, I went right through the protruding part as if it weren't there at all. The fuselage is made very smooth, and the curve is better drawing it this way....

Zooming in some more, and Clicking onto the left point of the open segment, I can now add in the part. Because the segment is from a curve, there is ome curve still applied to that point. I used this in manipulating the additional work on the path. Where I made the bottom left point (Cursored in screen cap), I click once, then click again and drag out to the right a little. This pulls only one handle bar, and then when I click onto the other open point of the segment, the path becomes complete again, and creates an "S" curve. I adjusted the points slightly to fit......

GoldiLoches | Out of the Woods...

There are several ways to add textures to an image. Many times you want to enhance the feel of something or bring attention to it in some way. Texurizing works ver well for that. I nvere do it ove the entire image either, although you sure can if you want to. I like to select portions to have the texture contained within. Just use the tools for selecting and you shouldn't have any trouble at all. That first image incorporates a very complex grid pattern and blends it very softly into the woman. I initially used the Lighting Effects filter to make it become the color I wanted for this piece. I had a yellow light and the ambient color set for orange. I used the Spotlight setting for the light and played around with it until I liked the look. Then I carefully cut out the model from the original background she was in. I used the Pen Tool for the selecting. As I've mentioned before the pen tool makes a very precise and hard edge to the selection, which it is supposed to do as often times you need that. But, for this piece the model's skin edge is a little softer, so we needed to sdjust that through feathering. That is further explained here if you are not familiar with the procedure...

We always name our first and primary path "Edge", this makes it very easy to remember which one we want when you want the entire subject. any other paths we name according to something we will remember within the image when selected. That had just one path, even though it selected out four jets. The second screen shows you how to contract and soften the edge of any image to match the softness of the original. Just click the Thunderbirds2 link above for a complete description of that.

You will also notice in GoldiLoches, that the grid portion blends in very softly. That was very quick and easy, maybe a couple of seconds. Once you have the portion isolated on its own layer, just duplicate it. We lawyas duplicate, because we make mistakes. We just through out the mistakes, then duplicate again and try it again, until we like it. Anyway, with the subject on its own layer use the Lasso Tool to make a very quick selction, and come down on the contours of the body, like when the shoulder blades are. That dips the model into the grid, and its very easy. Have the toll feathered strong, maybe 20-30 pixels. I hit it twice in spots too, this quickly spreads the feather and creates an adjustment in the blends and is more realistic. Just two quick selections instead of one. You never have to be precise at all with a a strong feather applied, as it makes no difference, it is just wasting time, so do it real quick and it helps you get used the feel of doing it as well.

The above photographic manipulation actually started out as a black and white photo of just one light bulb...

With selections and feathering I applied the glow effect on multiple layers. I use a sequencing of that image for the intro video to our site, GrfxDziner.com. It is featured towards the end, and the light flashes with the sound effect.

There is a strip of the unblurred background across the bottom in that animated sequence. It's just a couple layers of blurring and multiplying to darken the image like that. The blurring helps bring the logos forward some too. Here are the some of the image steps for sequencing...

It will always help the effects a great deal when you adjust the lighting in stages. You may not use all of the steps, but having them available when you are doing the effect will allow for more options. Once I did all of the work in the initial edit from the top of this post (you can click that image for a full description of the edit), it only took a few minutes to do each of the steps for the effect. I do them in progressive layers, then just save each layer as a separate file. Sequence your file names too, and make the changes near the end of the file name. When you go to load them into some programs such as Flash, the program will recognize the sequence and ask you if it should load them all. This speeds up the importing process quite a bit, and will allow photos to be arranged easily in order.

Most animation/slideshow programs have a "tweening" function that allows for for very smooth blending. These will help you in learning some simple photographic animation effects...

Pause the movies while they play, and then use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the flare back and forth. Make the light dance! Then, put on a song you like, and make the light dance to the song. Try it with the different movies too. They are set at different rates, so you can use that to adjust your tempo. That same idea is how you make the imagery blend and pop with the beat of the music. You also want your videos to "stream", so that the sound is always synched with the imagery.

Hair We Go Again...

This is an edit I did for Ian Jardine a little while ago. The photographer had wanted to push the background to pure white (click the below edited image for more complete instructions!). The best way to do that, without sacrificing the quality of the photo, is to isolate...or mask it.

A great way for isolating hair is with channel masking. It is a little more difficult to do than other masking, but once you get used to it, you will find that you can use the same, or similar, technique for many images. Hair is always the most difficult thing to work with. Well....

Initially I had the image in RGB mode, but none of those three channels had a decent contrast between hair and background. So I switched the color mode to CMYK, and got 4 different channels. The Yellow channel had nice contrast, and some great details in the foreground model's hair...

I selected All from within the Yellow Channel, then converted the image back to RGB without flattening, and pasted into the image so it would be an additional layer. Now, each separate channel is like a black and white (greyscale) image...and there was still some tone in the background. I boosted the contrast to push the background to pure white as well as trying to maintain as much hair detail as possible. Remember I am creating my own mask as a layer here, so I need to paint black onto the models. I used a large brush for most, and switched to a smaller one for the edges...

I left the details of the blonde model's hair as well as her earrings. I then duplicated this layer (and shut it off) to add more black. I couldn't easily go back to this version, so the duplicate layer is a safety before I paint over the highlights. On the duplicate layer I painted all the highlights, and then used a soft large brush to include a bit on the edge of the hair. This can help the finer details more. Then, apply this layer as a "Screen" mode, and this will make the background pure white while it maintains all details of the hair...

It was a super shot to start with. The local photographers in their area get together, and have a flickr meet up. They are mostly strobist shooters, but it is a great opportunity for someone starting out who doesn't have strobe lights yet. They help each other, and usually have a few professional models at the shoot. You share your work with the models, so they get some nice photos in return for their work.

Window Pane • Reflections on glass...

Adding reflections is fairly straight forward, and can add a greater amount of interest to any image. One of the best tools for this is the Polygonal Lasso Tool. It will allow you to quickly and effectively select the panes. Always remember to save off your selection, so you can lad it back in whenever you want. Add the reflection imagery on different layers. Apply them As "Screen" blending mode and/or "Multiply" blending mode. Adjust your opacity and then load in the selection, select inverse, and then delete. If you need to add a touch of feather to the selection, you can do that as well. Just hit delete again after you apply the reflection and your image edge will be softer. You can keep hitting just the delete button and the edge will soften even more.

The above photographic work has the reflection of three images, all combined on separate layers. The imagery was arranged specifically to fit within and around the model. The branch is reaching out to her. Her beauty is as remarkable as the most magnificent scene from a window. The below photographic example also incorporates a specific scene in the reflection. Only one image was used, and was cut up in portions, so that each window had certain elements. The existing transluscency is still visible. This can help with making it look more realistic. If the available window imagery is too strong, just add a layer of white, or black, and use your selection to trap it out.

Depth through Isolation...

Often times, especially under natural light condistions, it can be difficult to add emphasis to your subject matter. The below examples have the subject isolated in the initial photograph. I then added a touch of step blurring and two gradations to darken the top portion, and blend down towards the bottom of the frame. There are several ways to make the isolation. I always prefer selections for this, and I used the Pen Tool for the selection process. The Magnetic Lasso Tool is another that could be used, but with the form of the female figure the flowing curves of the Pen Tool is better suited.

I make the path with as few points as possible. Remember the Pen Tool is specifically designed for flowing compound & complex curves. It does make a very crisp edge as well, and often needs to be softened to match the photographic edge of the model. A technique that I use is to turn the path into a selection, then contract 1 or 2 pixels, depending on the softness of the edge you are matching. Feather this a 1/2 or 1 pixel, select inverse and this will create a trap for you to work with on the layer of the isolated subject. Just erase along the edge to match the feel of the photographic edge.

On this photograph I have added an additional sky. I made certain that the light source in the sky matched the light source and direction of the photograph. This is essential, and will always make the work look realistic, and natural. Combining layers on seperate layers and applying these layers as a combination of Screen and Multiply blending modes will allow you to maintin some of the fine details in the image, such as hair.

Those may help you with capturing nice tonal qualities and better develop your compositions. The curves and structure of the human anatomy will allow for some wonderful opportunities to work with lighting and shadows. In natural light situations it is often helpful to have the sun lower in the sky, and possibly a bit overcast so the light is filtered and softer.

Some tutorials from the Deanna Cremin Memorial Foundation specifically for the Pen Tool and Magnetic Lasso Tool. Remember if you are blurring the background some, you will need to use the Smudge Tool to tuck the resulting halo under the isolated subject.

We have been working more and more over the last couple years in hopes of expanding upon all of the projects that are a part of the Deanna Cremin Memorial Foundation. It is always been our belief to encourage and embrace others, just as Deanna did through her very vibrant life. Deanna was always so inspired to reach out and find the ones that others may have over looked. Through the upcoming year and beyond, the Foundation that bears her name will do the same.

It is always such a pleasure to meet a new friend that shares a similar interest. Smoke and Mirrors, Fire too...

I use symmetry often in my work, especially in some of the CD covers that I do. I have often found that you can get some very interesting patters and shapes with the effect. This is sometimes referred to as mirroring. A mere duplication, flipped horizontally and blended in. When I create the initial artwork, I leave a little overlap intentionally. Once duplicated and mirrored, I softly remove the overlap so no seem is present....

Working on many multiple layers, and using the various blending modes, allows for visual effects that can look quite realistic. The light blending modes will let an artist add to and create fire and smoke. Distorting and layering these more gives control of the elements too...

I thought this photo was so wonderful!! I touched up the skin as kathygray had requested and got rid of the watery eye, lips and chin. I brightened and contrasted the entire subject, except his shirt. I then darkened just the background. I used only the lasso tool with varying feather amounts. I think it is the best tool for portrait work becase it allows you to use such a soft edge. Thank you cathygray for letting me work on your awesome photo!!

And thank you for your interest cathygray. On this fix I actually did no blurring at all. What I did was select a portion that was close to the portion to be fixed. for instance, on Sam's forhead there were some red sploches, so I would select a portion of skin close to that area with the lasso. Just a quick circle or oval. For small selections I had the feather set at 4-6. I would copy this to a new layer and slide it into position. The lighting changes very subtley through the face, so this copied portion usually needs to be adjusted with the brightness control. Once i got the lighting where I liked it I would move on to the next portion. I usually work on the image quite large, and I always make sure the fix is completely undetectable. I also check it at a small size where the image fits fully on the screen.

When I am doing several portions like this I just keep adding layer and layer with the fixed portions. I keep the original photo as the background layer (which I keep turnd off) and work of a copy of the original, so when I get several layers that I am happy with I select "merge visible" from the layers pull down menu. This combines all of the visible layers onto one. There is no goin back now, so I make sure the edits are completely unnoticed.

For the eyes I used a feather of 2 pixels and copied small portions from the left eye that I flipped, and brightened for the right eye. I used the eraser airbrush to help soften the edges of the selections where needed. Once the watery reflections were gone I selected the just the whites of both eyes using a feather of 1 pixel. I created a new layer that I added a fill of white to. I use increments of 5% until I get it to where I like it, this one was 15%. Sometimes it may end up looking too flat so I can simply adjust the opacity of this layer and fine tune it to where it looks best.

For the iris' I also used a feather of 1 pixel and then first sharpened then contrasted this selection. For the lip I selected the right side and included a good portion below, almost to the chin. I copied this and flipped it horizontally. Because it is slightly closer to us I scaled it up just a bit. I used a feather of 33 for this selection so it would blend quite smoothly. Once I got the size correct I used the airbrush eraser to blend it even more. I like to use a large brush for this, 100 pixels, with a very soft pressure, 8-10%. This allows you to sort of tease the edge and make it very subtle.

For under the nose I did the same by selecting different portions of one side and flipping it for the other. If your selection is smal, so too should be the feather. Keep it as soft as you can. If the portion you have selected is not quite opaque enough, simply duplicate that layer once or twice and it should help cover what is below.

I had a total of about 175-200 layers, but merged them as I went so I was only working with about 20 at a time. With more mature skin I usually select a mask so to speak of the final touched up face to a new layer and blur slightly, but this little guy has perfectly soft skin already. He is just way too cute. Makes me smile everytime I see him. I like that.

I started putting together this tribute for US Soldiers, and their families. I work on it from time to time. This is the version prior. Changes are at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier (midway) and the United States Marine Memorial Statue (end). I was pretty amazed a few weeks ago when Airforce 1 flew over the sky line of New York...at an alarming low altitude, and escorted by a fighter jet. How could anyone make that mistake? You must be kidding me! To make it even worse, I heard it cost the tax payers of America $328,835.00. Are you kidding me again!! I don't understand how we go out and comletely panic the people of whose contry you lead, and then charge them $328,835.00 for their grief. I am also wondering, where are the pics? How did they come out? Can I have an 8 x 10?

That "Photo Op" was to have airforce one shot with the Statue of Liberty in the shot too. Why did we not use our skils, and edit some photos to create the idea? A fairly simple task, that many enjoy doing. And, it certainly would not of cost close to a half million dollars! It most easily could have looked better too, compositing images allows you to choose the best ones of each subject. Relighting and working over the image will allow it to be perfect. Too bad folks were not informed of this Phot Op of one of the most popular landmarks in our country. It would eased the panic, and possibly hatched an opportunity for the citizens to create the image themselves, instead of charging them $328,835.00 for it. I would have done one for sure, and not charged you a dime. Can I see the results you got from the shoot?

This is an RAAF F-111C fix I did awhile ago, just for fun. I really enjoy high speed aircraft, and working on images that incorporates them is enjoyable to me.

The first thing I did was pull down a guideline and use the distort function to correct the horizon in the photo. This is described in,
Lesson 3A: Distion Techniques

Once I had things level, I worked on the color levels. This is found in, Image>adjustment>levels. I opened the Red, then the green, then the blue channels, and pulled the arrows in on the outside edges, until it hit the histogram...

Once I leveled the colors, I added some red to the fore ground using the lasso tool to make a soft selection. I added clouds from this image, as well as the ocean to help add color:

I just used a portion, and stretched it a bunch with the scale tool. By only scaling horizontally, the clouds become very elongated, and blurred it a bit more. I thought this added to the horizontal lines of the beach and horizon. Once I had it fit, I duped the layer, and applied the first one as soft light blending. The second one I applied as muliply and masked out the girl. I added some cyan to this layer, and adjusted the opacity. I flattened it and added an additional flare. I also removed the two very hot spots the flare applies.

Deanna Cremin | a Quest for Justice...

Some of you may not be aware, but the Deanna Cremin murder case is still unsolved. It has been over 14 years since Deanna Cremin was strangled, just three days after her 17th birthday. She was doing homework at her boyfriend's house, and told her Mom she would see her later, and that she loved her. Deanna never returned that night, March 29, 1995. Her body was discovered the following morning by two kids going to school.

Deanna Cremin's family and friends have been trying so hard to get justice for their beloved child. The District Attorney's office has announced that an eyewitness of sorts is needed. A few years ago forensic evidence became available that was unattainable at the time of the crime.

Deanna's Mom, Katherine Cremin started a petion several years ago in hopes of having Kurtis Productions do a cold case episode on Deanna Cremin's unsolved murder case. Unfortunately A&E cancelled his show, but the Cremin's family and friends were able to obtain over 4,000 signatures from people hoping that her story be aired. This is Katherine's plea for Justice...

They really only need a small bit of information. It will make all the difference. Deanna was so special to everyone she knew. Probably half of Somerville had her as a babysitter, or teacher's aide. She voluteered at the Somerville Community Acces Television studios too...helping kids with their plays and stuff. Everybody knew Deanna, and how truly sweet she was. There is still a $20.000.00 Reward! offered for ANY information that leads to a conviction in her case.
